About
Players can try to break out of Alcatraz, free a girl from the grip of The Caretaker, or save a ship and its crew in the Engine Room, which exists in two identical versions so rival teams can race each other. Every game lasts 60 minutes, and all four rooms can run at the same time for larger groups. Because the rooms are housed in De Machinist, teams can move straight on to food and drinks in the building's restaurant, and groups playing in rounds can fill the wait with drinks or a pub quiz.
The games
3 games to choose from
Breakout Rotterdam, in the cultural venue De Machinist, offers three real-life escape rooms, each with a one-hour limit. Alcatraz puts you inside the infamous island prison where, officially, nobody ever escaped. The Caretaker, the newest, takes you into a school janitor's workroom to rescue the headmaster's missing daughter among laboratory props and sect symbols. Engine Room traps you in the engine bay of an old Russian nuclear submarine, and it also exists in a twin for head-to-head battles.
The experience
The atmosphere and the groups this venue has in mind.
Atmosphere
The venue promises that you look, listen, smell, taste and feel the story. Escape rates of 38 to 50 percent show the rooms are demanding, and the dark Caretaker plot contrasts with the heavy industrial tension of the reactor room. After the game, food and drink are served at De Machinist.
Who it suits
Friends, colleagues and families who like hard logic puzzles. Teams of two to six work, with four recommended, and four rooms can run at once for up to 24 players. Children of 13 and under need a companion aged 16 or older.
